Course objective
1. to develop all language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) at A2 level;
2. to develop communication skills in typical everyday situations;
3 to introduce basic vocabulary and grammatical structures to communicate in everyday situations;
4. to develop inter-cultural competence.
Prerequisites
• knowledge of Russian at A1 level according to CEFR
• knowledge of general English at a communicative level
Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
The Student:
1. identifies words and expressions connected with areas of most immediate personal relevance (family, everyday life, work, surroundings, travelling, home and environment, education, culture and customs);
2. identifies grammatical structures at A2 level;
3. presents basic information connected with the geography and culture of Russia (location, nature, means of transport, sights and landmarks);
SKILLS
LISTENING
1. identifies phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (place of living, family, work, education, leisure time, health etc) when the speaker speaks slowly and clearly;
2. understands main points in short, simple messages and announcements when the speaker speaks slowly and clearl;
READING:
1. understands the main message of simple texts related to areas of most immediate personal relevance;
2. finds necessary information in simple everyday texts such as advertisements, timetables, or prospectuses;
SPEAKING:
1. communicates in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange on familiar and routine matters;
2. uses a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms people, living conditions, educational background, work, Russian symbols, weather, seasons, transport etc
WRITING
1.writes short and simple texts and messages related to typical everyday situations;
2. writes very short letters using expressions related to areas of most important personal relevance;
3. fills in simple forms and questionnaires;

SOCIAL COMPETENCES
1. evaluates their language skills and is aware of how important they are for professional development; 
2. initiates and participates in different activities that aim at improving language skills; 
3. is aware of their national heritage and cultural diversity and can interact with members of different cultural backgrounds

Students are assessed on the basis of:
- class participation
- homework
- tests

Fail (2) 
- does not know the vocabulary and grammatical structures described in the course content;
- cannot understand written or spoken texts at A2 level;
- cannot communicate in simple and routine tasks and produce short written texts at A2 level;
- is not able to take part in group or pair work; 

Satisfactory(3) 
- has a limited knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures described in the course content;
- partly understands written or spoken texts at A2 level;
- finds it difficult to communicate in simple and routine tasks and produce short written texts at A2 level; 
- understands the need for self-study and group work;
Good (4) 
- knows most of the vocabulary and grammatical structures described in the course content;
- understands most information in written or spoken texts at A2 level;
- communicates quite well in simple and routine tasks and produces short written texts at A2 level;
- can work on their own and cooperate in a group; 

Very good (5) 
- knows all the vocabulary and grammatical structures described in the course content; 
- can easily understand written or spoken texts at A2 level;
- communicates well and easily in simple and routine tasks and produces short written texts at A2 level;
- actively engages in class discussions, group or pair work, and is aware of the importance of self-study.
